Brazilian coffee micro-lots. The best of what each harvest produces.

Not all green coffee is created equal. And not all green coffee from the same region — or even the same farm — is created equal either.

A coffee micro-lot is a small, separately harvested and processed batch of coffee that has been identified, isolated, and handled with the specific intention of preserving its unique quality. It might be a single block of trees at a particular altitude. A specific varietal harvested on a single day at peak ripeness. A processing experiment that a farmer has been refining for years. What every micro-lot has in common is this: it exists because someone at origin decided that this specific coffee was worth treating differently — and had the skill and infrastructure to follow through on that decision.

At Orange Brown Imports, micro-lots are not a marketing category. They are the coffees our team identifies on the ground in Brazil as genuinely standing apart from the rest of the harvest — and sources specifically for roasters who are looking for something exceptional to put at the top of their menu.

What makes a micro-lot?

Not every small batch of coffee qualifies as a micro-lot. The term is used loosely across the industry — which is exactly why understanding what it actually means matters when you are buying green coffee.

A genuine coffee micro-lot has three defining characteristics:

  • Separation at origin.

A micro-lot begins with a deliberate decision at the farm to separate a specific batch from the main harvest. This might be a single varietal block, a specific altitude band, a particular picking day, or a processing method applied to a small batch. The separation has to be intentional and maintained throughout harvesting, processing, drying, milling, and export — one contaminated step and the lot loses its identity.

  • Traceability to a specific source.

A micro-lot is traceable — not just to a region or a cooperative, but to a specific farm, a specific block, or a specific producer. With Orange Brown Imports, that means we can take you to the exact part of the farm where your lot was produced, with every detail of how it was created. Without genuine traceability, it is not a micro-lot — it is just a small bag with a creative name.

  • Cup quality that justifies the distinction.

A micro-lot exists because the coffee in it is exceptional. Not just good. Not just above average for the region. Genuinely outstanding — the kind of cup that a trained palate immediately recognises as something worth calling out separately. If the cup does not justify the separation, the separation serves no purpose.

Why Brazilian micro-lots are worth your attention

Brazil is the world's largest coffee producer — and for much of the market, that fact has defined how it is perceived: high volume, consistent, reliable. A blending origin. A base note.

That perception is outdated. And the best evidence for that is the micro-lot programme emerging from Brazil's top specialty farms.

When a Brazilian producer with deep farming knowledge, exceptional terroir, and the right varietal turns their attention to a small, separated, carefully managed lot — the results are extraordinary. Most coffee-producing regions in Brazil, such as the Cerrado Mineiro, Alta Mogiana, Sul de Minas, Mantiqueira de Minas, and Norte Pioneiro, produce micro-lot coffees that compete with the finest lots from anywhere in the world.

What makes Brazilian micro-lots particularly compelling for roasters:

  • → Scale behind the quality.

Brazil's farming infrastructure is among the most advanced in the world. When a Brazilian producer applies that infrastructure — precision harvesting, controlled processing, sophisticated drying — to a small, separated lot, the result is a level of consistency and repeatability that is genuinely rare in the micro-lot category.

  • → Processing innovation.

Brazil's top specialty farms are at the frontier of processing experimentation. Natural, pulped natural, honey, anaerobic, extended fermentation — the range of processing methods being applied to micro-lots in Brazil's specialty regions is expanding year on year, producing cup profiles that challenge every expectation about what Brazilian coffee can taste like.

  • → Varietal diversity.

Yellow Bourbon, Arara, Catucaí, Obatã, Paraíso, and so many others — Brazil's varietal landscape is far more diverse than most roasters realise. When these varietals are isolated and processed as dedicated micro-lots, they produce cup profiles with a specificity and complexity that a blended regional lot simply cannot deliver.

  • → Traceability at depth.

Our team is on the ground in Brazil year-round. When we identify a micro-lot, we know the farm, the block, the varietal, the harvest date, and the processing details — because we were there, or we have direct contact with the producer who managed it. That depth of traceability is what gives you a story worth telling.

How we identify and source micro-lots

Finding a genuine micro-lot is not something you can do from a desk. It requires being present at origin — during the harvest, at the processing station, in conversation with the farmer — to identify the lots that are genuinely worth separating before they disappear into the general harvest.

This is what our team does in Brazil every year.

Our members based in Brazil maintain year-round contact with the farms and cooperatives in our network, which means we know when a particular producer is working on something exceptional — a new varietal block coming into production, a processing experiment that has been developing for two or three harvests, a specific microclimate on a farm that consistently produces outstanding cherry. We are in a position to identify and secure those lots early, before they are gone.

When we bring a micro-lot to a roaster, it comes with:

  • Full farm-level traceability

Region, farm, varietal, processing method, tasting profile, and altitude. Everything a roaster needs to tell the story with confidence.

  • Verified quality

Every lot is cupped and assessed by our team before it is offered. We do not source micro-lots on the basis of score sheets alone. We taste them.

  • Honest availability information

Micro-lots are by definition limited. We will tell you how much of a lot exists, what the realistic timeline is for repeat availability, and whether a similar lot from the same farm is likely in the next harvest.

Micro-lots across Brazil's top specialty regions

We source micro-lots from farms and cooperatives across all of Brazil's major specialty-producing regions. Each region has its own micro-lot story to tell:

Cerrado Mineiro — Micro-lots from Brazil's first Denomination of Origin region, where defined dry seasons and mineral-rich soil produce lots of exceptional consistency and structure. Natural and pulped natural processing on selected blocks produces some of the most complex Brazilian cups available.

Alta Mogiana — High-altitude lots from the terra roxa soils of the São Paulo and Minas Gerais border. Micro-lots from the region's best farms showcase the natural sweetness and velvety body that Alta Mogiana is celebrated for, in a more concentrated, traceable form.

Sul de Minas — The rugged terrain of Sul de Minas creates a patchwork of distinct microclimates that are ideal for micro-lot production. Hand-harvested lots from small family farms at higher elevations produce profiles with brightness and complexity that standard regional blends rarely capture.

Mantiqueira de Minas — One of Brazil's most acclaimed specialty regions. Micro-lots from Mantiqueira farms — particularly Yellow Bourbon lots from higher elevations — produce cups of exceptional complexity: layered fruit, refined acidity, and a sweetness that sets them apart from every other Brazilian origin.

Norte Pioneiro, Paraná — Brazil's only specialty region outside the tropics, where four distinct seasons slow cherry development and build unusual complexity. Micro-lots from Norte Pioneiro farms offer a cup profile that surprises roasters expecting a standard Brazilian profile: creamy, sweet, with a bright citric lift that reflects the region's subtropical terroir.

Who micro-lots are right for

Coffee micro-lots are not for every roaster at every stage of their programme. They are the right choice when:

You are building a premium single-origin tier. Micro-lots give your menu a top-of-range offering with a specific, compelling story — a named farm, a specific varietal, a defined processing method — that your customers can connect with.

You want to differentiate your Brazilian programme. Most roasters offering Brazilian coffee are sourcing a regional blend. A farm-specific micro-lot from Mantiqueira or Cerrado Mineiro signals to your customers that you are operating at a different level of curation.

You are developing your palate for Brazilian specialty. Tasting a carefully isolated micro-lot from a single varietal and processing method is one of the most effective ways to understand what Brazilian coffee can taste like at its best — and to calibrate your sourcing decisions accordingly.

You are ready to tell a specific story. Micro-lots reward roasters who communicate origin to their customers — on their website, their packaging, their social media, or their café menu. The specificity is the story.

Frequently asked questions

What volumes are typically available for micro-lots?

By definition, micro-lots are limited in quantity. Available volumes vary by farm, harvest, and lot. When you enquire about a specific micro-lot, we will give you a clear picture of what is available and what the realistic timeline is for repeat supply.

Can I get samples before committing?

Yes — always. We do not expect any roaster to commit to a lot without tasting it first. Request samples through the form below and we will send you the micro-lots that best match what you are looking for.

Are micro-lots available year-round?

Availability depends on the harvest cycle and the farm. Some lots are available as seasonal releases; others from farms with strong repeat production may be available across a longer window. We will be transparent about availability and timing when you enquire.

How do micro-lots differ from your standard custom sourcing?

Custom sourcing is about finding the right coffee for your business at any quality and volume level — it is the starting point for most roasters. Micro-lots are a specific category within custom sourcing: farm-specific, limited-quantity lots identified for their exceptional cup quality. They are not mutually exclusive — many roasters source both a consistent house Brazilian through custom sourcing and a rotating micro-lot programme on top of it.

Can I source Brazilian micro-lots on a repeat basis?

It depends on the farm and the lot. We work with farms whose production is consistent enough year on year to offer reliable repeat availability on certain lots. We will tell you honestly whether a lot you are interested in is likely to be repeatable — and if so, how to plan for it.
